Professional Development

My name is Maureen Bakis. I am high school English teacher in Massachusetts where I teach a course called The Graphic Novel to 12th graders. I created this site and The Graphic Novel Classroom: Powerful Teaching & Learning with Images to help anyone who is interested in teaching graphic novels.

Please contact me through this site if you are interested in a graphic novel professional development program for your school, library, or club. I can tailor a workshop face to face or online to meet your needs!

FEATURES/UPDATES

Just as a random FYI that has nothing to do with graphic novels, I'll be presenting at the 4T Virtual Conference on May 19th. My workshop is called Making American Literature iBooks. I had my 11th graders create interactive texts to learn more about effective ways to read actively and learn using Apple's new iAuthor tool! The Conference is FREE--- so check out the link! My buddy, Ryan Goble of Making Curriculum Pop is also presenting among other talented teachers!

Marjane Satrapi at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts

I think like a teacher. I act like a teacher. I listen and learn, always as a teacher. After attending a lecture given by Marjane Satrapi this past Wednesday evening in Boston at the Museum of Fine Arts, I realized, once again, the value of teaching Persepolis in the classroom with high school students. I'll pat myself on the back while I am here for the lessons I have developed around this text as a conduit of her important messages contained within. We are all human beings, we…

Educating about comics/ media education

So my colleague borrowed some graphic novels for her students to select as part of a Literature Circles unit. These students are in grade 12 and selected V for Vendetta, Persepolis, and Maus to read "for fun" in a literature circle group over the next few weeks.

During homeroom this morning, I overheard a student who is reading V for Vendetta say to his friend, "I'm reading this really weird book. It's a graphic novel and it makes no sense at all. I mean, it's an easy read because… Continue

Final Comprehensive Projects in The Graphic Novel Classroom

After we finish up our superheroes unit, students will show their skills and content knowledge gains this year in a final project. Their audience will be the students who have signed up for next year's Graphic Novel course and other students who may be interested in understanding what The Graphic Novel course is all about. Their projects, if successful, will show prospective students (in an engaging and entertaining way using multiple forms of media) what they will learn and the skills they… Continue

Superheroes Highlights

Over the last few weeks, my students have been learning about the way superhero stories reflect culture. We began the unit by watching Superheroes Unmasked, a History Channel documentary available here and on YouTube. This year, since I have very limited time to teach both V for Vendetta and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, I've asked students to focus on the ways a particular medium affects and shapes storytelling and basic characterization. I have also required students to read The Allegory… Continue

Doctoral Student Research

Hi all! My name is Alex Romagnoli, and I'm a doctoral student in the Composition and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. I'm currently working on my dissertation which is looking at how English teachers at the High School and College levels use graphic novels in their classrooms and how that usage indexes literacy privileging. I was wondering if there were any high school teachers within reasonable distance to Western…See More
